On 9th June, our Regional Director, Fr. John Boles, and Columban Trustee, Fr. Denis Carter, had the honour of switching on the new installation, marking our move towards renewable energy powered by the sun. The project has been several months in the making and involved the installation of 116 solar panels on our site. Now fully connected, the system is already generating clean electricity and will help reduce our carbon footprint for years to come.
The solar panels are much more than a practical investment. They are another expression of our long-standing commitment to ecological justice and care for creation. Inspired by the Gospel, Catholic Social Teaching and Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si’, we believe that caring for our common home is an important part of our missionary vocation.
Protecting and restoring biodiversity is one of our two Columban Mission Priorities. Around the world, Columban missionaries accompany communities affected by environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change. By embracing renewable energy here in Britain, we are seeking to ensure that our actions reflect the values we promote through our mission.
Fr. John Boles, Regional Director of the Columban’s in Britain, explains: “Care for creation is not an optional extra; it is central to our missionary vocation. We recognise that environmental destruction affects the poorest and most vulnerable first. If we are to stand in solidarity with communities living on the frontline of the climate crisis, we must also be willing to examine our own choices and reduce our impact on the environment. This investment in renewable energy is one practical way of putting our faith into action.”
The installation was carried out by Philotimo Smart Power Solutions Limited, specialists in commercial solar energy systems and smart power solutions. Working with organisations across the UK, Philotimo helps businesses and charities reduce their energy costs, lower carbon emissions and move towards Net Zero.
Peter Alder, Founder and Director of Philotimo, said “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have the opportunity to develop and deliver this milestone installation, assisting the Columbans to accelerate their energy transition from fossil fuels. The system will produce 52 MWh of green electricity per annum, enabling the site to reduce its energy consumption from the Grid by over 70%, and reduce its Grid electricity related CO2 emissions by over 7.2 tonnes annually.”
The solar panels are the latest addition to the ongoing rewilding and ecological enhancement of our grounds in Solihull. Over recent years, we have planted more than 6,000 native trees, created wildflower meadow areas and introduced beehives, helping to create habitats for wildlife and increase biodiversity across the site.
Together, these projects are helping to transform our grounds into a living example of how communities can respond positively to environmental challenges. They also provide opportunities for visitors, schools and supporters to experience the beauty and richness of the natural world.
As the solar panels begin generating clean energy, we hope they will be a visible reminder that small and practical actions can make a difference. They are another step on our ecological journey and our commitment to building a more sustainable future.
