Columban Co-worker Emma Darling explains why the Columban Missionaries are holding their first-ever Summer Open Day and how it reflects their commitment to caring for creation.

The Columban Missionaries in Britain are pleased to be holding their very first Open Day in the grounds of the St. Columban house in Solihull this summer.

Families, parishioners and members of the local community are invited to enjoy a free day of nature, discovery and fun at the St. Columban Summer Open Day in Knowle, Solihull, on Wednesday 19 August from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

This family-friendly event offers a wonderful opportunity to explore nature, discover wildlife and enjoy time outdoors during the school summer holidays. Throughout the event, visitors will have the chance to learn more about the environmental activities and educational resources offered by the Columban Missionaries in Britain, which support one of the Society’s key priorities: the protection and restoration of biodiversity.

Visitors can take part in a range of exciting and engaging activities throughout the day. Young people can discover common garden pond creatures, including newts, water boatmen and pond skaters, during interactive pond-dipping sessions led by Columban volunteers and co-workers. Families will also be invited to explore creation through a scavenger hunt, searching for treasures found in nature, insects and signs of local wildlife around the grounds.

Using recycled materials, children will have the opportunity to take part in creative arts and crafts activities designed to inspire imagination while encouraging care for creation.

There will also be opportunities to meet Columban missionary priests and hear stories of faith and mission from countries including Pakistan and Peru. A short liturgy and time for reflection will be offered for those who wish to participate. Local beekeeper Sheila Vanhouse will be on hand throughout the day to explain why the Columbans keep bees on site and how pollinators play a vital role in protecting biodiversity.

Guests will be able to see first-hand how the Columbans in Britain are rewilding the grounds in response to our commitment to biodiversity. Visitors can explore our wildflower meadows designed to improve habitats for bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife. There will also be opportunities to discover the popular “Columbug” insect hotel and learn about the recently installed solar panels that help power the site while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Those wishing to venture further afield can follow the newly completed eco-path through the grounds and observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

A variety of outdoor games made from recycled materials will also be available to families throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic so they can enjoy lunch alongside other local families, parishioners and nature enthusiasts.

Anyone looking for family-friendly activities this summer, or wishing to spend time outdoors and learn more about caring for our common home, is encouraged to sign up to the event. Places for the event are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage interested participants to register as soon as possible and to share details with friends, family, neighbours, schools and parish communities.

Please note that bees are present on site although the hives will be clearly marked so that families can keep their distance. Visitors are advised to come prepared for all weather conditions and bring suitable clothing and footwear, as well as waterproofs, sunscreen, hats and plenty of drinks. Hot drinks for adults will be offered, and toilet and handwashing facilities are available.

The Columban Summer Open Day reflects the Columban commitment to care for the environment, engage with local communities and share the Good News of Jesus Christ through practical action and environmental stewardship. We look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages for a day of fun, learning, reflection and discovery, while celebrating the wonder of God’s creation together.
