Abi is the latest Columban Faith in Action Volunteer. Abi studied International Development and Relations at the University of Birmingham, and as a result, is passionate about social justice, reducing inequality and speaking up for marginalised communities. She is proud to have previously served on Just Love Brum’s committee. This student-led group engages Christian students and fights for the love and justice of Jesus in Birmingham and beyond! Besides this, Abi has volunteered with Let’s Feed Brum and Embrace, both local charities. As a Christina, Abi feels social justice issues are important, and specifically gender inequality, violence against women and girls, refugee rights and racial injustice are areas that interest her. Having written a dissertation on the treatment of refugees in relation to the white saviour complex and, as a committed Christian, she attended the Churches of Sanctuary Conference in Birmingham in 2023. This is where she discovered the Society of St. Columban. She is delighted to be able to put her passion and academic understanding into action, with a vision to see the unseen, and be the hands and feet of Jesus this year and into the future. She is excited to engage with refugee and asylum seeker communities and to campaign for their rights alongside likeminded individuals. She is keen to explore more about areas of justice, specifically climate justice. Furthermore, she is enthusiastic about the opportunity of visiting schools and engaging with both educators and the next generation.
