We are pleased to announce that our recent CSSA audit resulted in an overall grading of ‘Comprehensive Assurance’. This milestone reflects our commitment to safeguarding and ensuring that all who engage with the Columban mission in Britain are supported and protected.
The CSSA audit assesses safeguarding practice across eight national standards used by the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The process includes self-assessment, submission of evidence, interviews with leadership and staff, and an on-site visit which took place in February 2026. For religious communities such as the Columbans, this independent review provides valuable accountability and helps ensure safeguarding practices remain robust, transparent and responsive to evolving best practice.
The audit recognised safeguarding embedded across leadership structures, policies, and daily activities. Highlights included strong governance, regular safeguarding training for priests, staff, and volunteers, and the presence of a dedicated lay safeguarding officer. Policies developed locally and internationally were acknowledged as being of a very high standard, with safeguarding described as being “at the heart” of our mission and culture.

Fr. John Boles, Regional Director of the Columbans in Britain, said: “This result demonstrates our continued commitment to safeguarding others. It is a testimony to the hard work and diligence of everyone involved, priests, staff, and volunteers alike. Safeguarding is not simply a requirement for us; it is a core part of our mission.”
The audit also recognised our competence in safeguarding practice and our willingness to reflect and improve. While strong progress was evident, the report recommended developing a formal safeguarding implementation plan to further strengthen oversight and provide additional assurance to trustees and stakeholders.
Jane Jones, Safeguarding Officer for the Columbans in Britain, explains: “The CSSA audit provides an essential opportunity for reflection and accountability. It encourages us to review our policies and procedures to ensure we meet national safeguarding standards. I am pleased that the Columbans in Britain have achieved Comprehensive Assurance and welcome the audit’s recommendations to support ongoing improvement.”
The Columbans remain committed to continuous safeguarding development. By embracing independent review and maintaining strong compliance, we aim to ensure safe environments across all ministries in Britain; in areas linked to our priorities: refugees and migrants, and biodiversity protection and restoration.
