When faith matters more than numbers

Fr. Tim Mulroy provides this wonderful reflection, prayer and scripture readings for Mass this weekend based on rediscovering the Church’s mission today, showing how deep faith and faithful witness matter more than numbers.

Scripture for Mass

Isaiah 58:6-10

Psalm: 112(111):4-5, 6-7. 8a,9. Response: 4a

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Matthew 5:13-16

In recent decades, the decline of congregations, the amalgamation of parishes, and the closure of church buildings has left Christians in several countries saddened that the Church is in serious decline. Besides, there is the commonly held belief that a much smaller Church will have a much smaller role in mainstream society during the coming decades.

Indeed, if we compare the current signs of the Church’s decline with its previous numerical strength and pervasive influence in society, our concerns and fears for its future are well-founded. However, if we were to view the Church through a different lens, then we might be surprised by what comes into view.

When Jesus told his followers that they were the salt of the earth he wanted to emphasise that being small is not a disadvantage nor a defect.  For just as a few grains of salt can greatly flavour a large dish, so also a few Christians can have a major impact on the surrounding society. Indeed, it is the quality of the salt rather than the quantity that is the decisive factor in determining its impact.

There is no reason, therefore for us to feel discouraged by the smaller number of people attending church services. Rather than striving to reverse it, we are called to deepen our relationship with Jesus, so that through radical and faithful witnessing to his gospel in our daily life, God will enrich the entire surrounding society in surprisingly effective ways.

God our Father, the life of your beloved Son, Jesus, was but one life among countless others on this earth.
Yet, through that one life lived in total obedience to you, you revealed your unconditional love and mercy, not only in one place, but throughout the world, not only in one era, but throughout all ages.
Even though our lives are short and our talents limited, grant us the grace to place all that we have at the service of the gospel, trusting that you will bless the surrounding world through us in ways that we cannot imagine.
We ask this through Christ, your faithful witness and our mentor.
Amen
