Stars that lead us to Christ!

Fr. Tim Mulroy has prepared these intercessions, prayers and a reflection for the Epiphany of the Lord, inviting us to think about the stars we follow, whether fleeting fame or the guiding light that leads us to Christ.

Scripture for Mass

Isiaah 60:1-6

Psalm 72(71):1-2.  7-8. 10-11. 12-13. Response cf. 11

Ephesians 3:22-3a, 5-6

Matthew 2:1-12

When was the last time you stood outside and gazed into the night sky? When was the last time you allowed yourself to feel wonder and awe as you contemplated the moon and stars? Ironically, while few of us consider it interesting or worthwhile to spend time pondering the magnificence of the universe that surrounds us, most of us remain enthralled by stars.

Surely, that is the reason that we spent these long winter evenings gazing at sports stars, film stars or music stars on our screens. Their talents captivate us. Moreover, by dazzling us with their glamour and fame, momentarily they take us out of the humdrum of our day-to-day lives.

The Magi were so captivated by the appearance of a new star that they set out to follow it, leaving behind their home country and travelling into unknown territory. The knew, however, that the star was but a signpost to their goal or destination – under the guidance of its light, their hearts were set on journeying onwards until they encountered the newborn Christ.

As we commence our journey into this New Year, we may wish to ask ourselves, where are our hearts being led by the stars which we follow night after night on our screens? And do we want to continue going in that same direction throughout 2026?

If our destination is an encounter with Christ, then – like the Magi – we will find it helpful to join with others who are making a similar journey, and together follow the signposts in creation which awaken our sense of awe and delight.

Creator God, we thank you for the splendour and beauty of the universe.
During these winter months, open the eyes of our hearts to recognise the light of your goodness shining through every star and snowdrop, every glistening drop of water and finely polished evergreen leaf.
As the Magi were led to encounter Christ through the radiance of a star, may we come to know him through our contemplation of creation.
May the Holy Spirit guide us to collaborate more closely with Christ who holds all things together and seeks to unite them in harmony.
We ask this through Christ, our Compass and Guide.
Amen.
