A common concern among Catholics is the lack of real community at church. Although people appear friendly and their greetings polite, conversations remain superficial, and a deeper sense of belonging seldom develops. Many attribute this to church leaders focusing on active ministries as the best way to draw people in; to our busy, stressful lives; and to our general inability to speak openly about what is happening in our lives. As a result, when we gather for Mass, we frequently do so not as a community but rather as a collection of individuals.
How, then, can we respond to Jesus’ invitation in today’s gospel reading not simply ‘to gather together for prayer’ but rather ‘to pray together’? How can we encourage and support one another within the Christian community so that we become one in heart and spirit? How can we guide and correct one another, and accept guidance and correction from one another so that the real presence of Christ is experienced among us?
There are no simple answers to these questions. However, Pope Leo – like his predecessor, Pope Francis – continues to propose a way to address them: the synodal path. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are invited to set out with other members of our church community on a journey of personal sharing and listening together. We are being asked to share with one another our struggles and successes, our disappointments and dreams, and to listen not only to one another’s ‘lyrics’ but also to the melodies of the heart.
The synodal path is a long and windy pilgrim way. However, we can be confident that Christ journeys with us, deepening his friendship with us, and deepening our friendship with one another.
Gracious God, open our hearts to you and to our sisters and brothers in Christ.
Even though each of us has our own fears and struggles, hopes and dreams, grant us the wisdom to recognise one another as companions on the same journey through this world with our eyes and hearts set on you.
In a spirit of genuine care and concern, teach us how to encourage one another, support one another, guide one another, and correct one another.
In a spirit of humility and gratitude, teach us to accept encouragement and support, guidance and correction from one another.
We ask this through Jesus our true guide and faithful friend.
